Hyaluronic acid (HA) has gained a lot of attention in the last few years in the cosmetic industry – it is a hot ingredient found in many anti-ageing products, but what exactly is it and what does it do?
Simply put, HA is a naturally occurring carbohydrate molecule found in our bodies – in fact, it is found in all connective tissues. However, the production of hyaluronic acid decreases as you age, starting from as young as 25 years old (20? Confirm RE: Dr. V’s comments in video)!
The greatest concentrations of HA in the body is found in the skin tissue – almost 50%!
HA has the unique ability to hold up to 1000 times its own weight in water, therefore, the most well known benefit of HA is aiding in skin hydration and holding in moisture. As we go through the ageing process, a decrease in HA results in a loss of skin firmness, flexibility and plumpness, thus resulting in saggy, wrinkled skin.
Due to its numerous benefits, HA is a commonly used ingredient in many skin care products.
When applied topically, HA is able to penetrate the upper layers of the skin. So, daily use of a topical HA can result in smoother, hydrated skin. As topical HA can only penetrate through the superficial layers of the skin, HA dermal fillers, such as Juvéderm® and Revanesse®, are injected into the deep layers of the skin to replenish volume loss and fill in deep wrinkles for up to a year.
